As the most versatile joint in the human body, our shoulder joint provides us with a tremendous amount of flexibility. However, this range of motion can lead to shoulder pain or discomfort. In most patients, when the shoulder hurts, it can be the result of one of four main causes: inflammation, instability, arthritis, or a fracture.
When to See a Shoulder Doctor Near You
If you are suffering from a shoulder injury or condition and/or are experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, it may be time to see a shoulder specialist.
- Pain and stiffness in or around the joint
- Limited shoulder mobility
- Difficulty and/or inability to reach overhead
- Shoulder pain that keeps you awake at night while trying to sleep
- A popping or grinding feeling when using the afflicted shoulder
You should also seek medical treatment with a shoulder specialist if you begin to feel feverish or if the area reddens, becomes warmer, and feels even more sensitive, as these are signs of an infection. Due to the constant stress and frequency of use, shoulder pain generally does not subside without treatment and may require surgery.
Common orthopaedic conditions and injuries patients suffer from include:
- Rotator cuff tears
- Frozen shoulder
- Throwing injuries
- Tendonitis (medically referred to as tendinitis)
- Tendon tears
- Shoulder instability
- SLAP or labrum tears
- Humerus fractures

Tips for Healthy Shoulders
Our shoulders will sustain a certain amount of wear and tear as we age. Remaining pain- and arthritis-free requires practicing good preservation techniques. The following techniques will help you to treat your shoulders with care as they age.
Every day, move each shoulder through its full range of motion to sustain mobility and freedom from pain. Make sure your movements are slow and gentle to avoid injury, and be careful not to overextend.
Avoid overextending or stressful positions as well as techniques that could put you at risk for injury.
Favor the larger joints and use the weaker ones for duties only they can handle. Using your hands, carry objects palm open to help distribute weight equally over your forearm. If available, make use of surfaces around you. Instead of lifting an object, slide the object across a surface like a table or workbench.
Avoid staying in the same position for a prolonged period of time. This will help to keep you from becoming stiff. In situations where this cannot be avoided, such as car rides, take a break every hour to stretch and adjust your seating position.
