Tips for a Healthy Back, Neck & Spine

The spine is a highly complex and critical component of the human body, protecting the spinal cord while offering strength, structure, and flexibility. The spine’s ability to provide support and mobility simultaneously makes it more susceptible to injury. The following techniques will help you to treat your spine with care as it ages.

Rest

While sleeping, be sure to allow your spine to rest. This may include choosing a mattress that ensures the best support and sleeping position for your condition.

Exercise Your Core

Since our core muscles are rarely used during everyday activities, it's important to target your lower back and abdominal muscles to keep them strong to help support your spine and take pressure off your lower back. 

Wear the Right Shoes

Good shoes provide a supportive base that helps the body remain in alignment. When choosing a shoe, make sure it fits the back of your heels but is not overly tight. This will further help balance and support. 

Posture

The manner in which you carry your body has a significant impact on whether you will remain pain-free. Practice good posture by adjusting work spaces to your specifications. Avoid back pain by picking items up using your legs, not your lower back. When carrying heavy objects, be sure to cradle the items close to your body.

Stay Active

Avoid keeping staying in the same position for a prolonged period of time. This will help to keep you from becoming stiff. In situations where this cannot be avoided, such as car rides, take a break every hour to stretch and adjust your seating position.
